About Word Search

Word search is the puzzle everyone already knows how to play, which is exactly why the details matter. This one is a 12x12 grid with ten words drawn from a single theme — a day at the beach, around the campfire, things in a toolbox — hidden in all eight directions. Several of them run backwards, several run diagonally, and the words cross each other at shared letters rather than sitting in tidy isolated stripes.

The filler letters are not random noise. They are drawn from the letter frequencies of the theme itself, so a grid about the beach is full of the same S, A, N and E you are hunting through, and you cannot shortcut the puzzle by looking for the one lonely W in a sea of X and Q. Every grid also passes a strictness check before it ships: each target word appears exactly once, in exactly one place. If you find a word, you have found the word — the filler never accidentally spells one somewhere else, which is the flaw that makes most computer-generated word searches quietly unfair.

A clean solve takes about seven minutes. If you are racing, the theme itself is the hint: read the title, guess what ten words a puzzle about that theme would use, and hunt for those. Half the grid usually falls out of that one move, and the archive keeps every past date if you want a different theme.

How to play Word Search

  1. 1Read the theme at the top of the grid and the list of ten words hidden inside it.
  2. 2Find a word by dragging (or clicking the first letter and then the last) across the letters that spell it.
  3. 3Words run in all eight directions: left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top, and all four diagonals.
  4. 4Words can cross each other and share letters, so a letter you have already used may belong to a second word as well.
  5. 5Each word appears exactly once, so once you have found it you can cross it off the list for good.
  6. 6Find all ten words to finish the grid. The answer page lists the starting square and direction of every word if you get stuck.

Word Search strategy

  • Hunt by first letter, not by shape. Pick the rarest opening letter on the list — a K, a V, a J — and sweep the grid for just that letter, checking the eight neighbours of each one. It is far faster than scanning for whole words.
  • Do the long words first. A nine-letter word can only start in a small number of squares, and once it is placed it hands you letters for anything that crosses it.
  • Scan systematically by direction. Read each row right to left once, each column bottom to top once, then run the diagonals. Most missed words are backwards ones that were never looked at from the right end.
  • Use double letters as anchors. If a word on the list has a repeated pair — LL, EE, SS, OO — find those pairs in the grid first; there are usually only a handful and each one is worth a direct check.
  • Cross words off the list as you find them and note their direction. Words often cluster: if three words in a row turned out to be diagonal, the setter had a busy corner, and the next one is probably nearby.
  • When you are down to the last word, work the leftovers. Look at the squares no found word passes through — the final word almost always lives in that unused space.

Word Search — common questions

Can words appear backwards or diagonally?

Yes. All eight directions are used every day, and each grid is built with at least a couple of backwards words and a couple of diagonals. The answer page tells you how many of each there are today, which is a genuinely useful hint when you are stuck on the last two.

Do the hidden words overlap?

Often, and on purpose. The generator prefers positions where a word crosses one already on the board at a shared letter. A single square can belong to two words, so never assume a letter is used up.

Could a word appear twice in the grid by accident?

No. After the filler letters are added, every target word is searched for in all eight directions from every square. If it turns up anywhere other than its intended spot, the filler is redrawn until the grid is clean, so each word is findable in exactly one place.

How big is the grid and how many words are there?

Twelve by twelve — 144 letters — with ten words from one theme. Words are four to nine letters long; three-letter words are excluded because they show up in random filler far too often.

Will the same theme come round again?

Not until every theme has been used. Themes are dealt in a shuffled cycle over the whole bank, and even when a theme does return, a different ten of its words are chosen and hidden in different places.

Is there a trick to finishing faster?

Two. Search for the rarest letter on the word list rather than reading the grid line by line, and place the longest word first — it constrains the fewest squares and usually crosses two or three of the others.
